Thanks for going to the trouble of putting this up. I enjoyed reading it although I have no recollection of it at all - as I have of quite a few of Mother’s other short stories. Not one of her best you would have to say and clearly needing more work but structurally interesting with the “flashbacks” from the scene of the killing working quite effectively. And yes, I remember Mother talking about her merchant mariner friend, a batchelor I think, though the years have erased the details unfortunately. I recall periodic reference to him over a very long period……

Wish I could remember more of him. We think we know our parents lives but in fact so much of them is a mystery to us….
